Tamayo

The Fall 2012 Latin American Art auction at Christie's New York is highlighted by a great Tamayo, a fabulous Morales, two excellent Sanchezs, some good Boteros, Mattas, Riveras and Lams, a superb Atchugarry, and good works by Portinari and Zuniga.

Lot 50, "Tres Personages en un Interior," is a vibrant and very strong oil and sand on canvas by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991).  It measures 32 1/4 by 39 1/2 inches and was painted in 1970.  It has a modest estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $698,500.

The sale total was $17,966,450 and auction records were set for 28 artists.

Tamayo2

Lot 20, "Man With Birds," by Rufino Tamayo, oil on canvas, 32 by 26 inches, 1950

Another Tamayo is Lot 20, Man with Birds," an oil on canvas that measures 32 by 26 inches and was painted in 1950.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.  It sold for $338,500.

Morales 1

Lot 36, "Oraculo sobre Managua (Homenaje a Ernesto Cardenal),  by Armando Morales, oil and beeswax on canvas, 63 3/4 by 79 1/4 inches, 1989

Lot 36 is a masterpiece by Armando Morales (1927-2011).  Entitled "Oraculo sobre Managua (Homenaje a Ernesto Cardenal)," it is an oil and beeswax on canvas that measures 63 3/4 by 79 1/4 inches.  Morales was born in Nicaragua and became a professor of painting at the Cooper Union in New Yorkl.  It was painted in 1989.  The title is a reference to an epic poem written by the Reverend Cardenal a year after a major earthquake  The lot has a modest estimate of $350,000 to $450,000.  It failed to sell.

Morales 2

Lot 49, "Trois Baigneuses," by Armando Morales, oil and beeswax on canvas, 23 5/8 by 28 3/4 inches, 1993

A small and much simpler Morales is Lot 49, "Trois Beigneuses," an oil and beeswax on canvas that measures 23 5/8 by 28 3/4 inches.  It was painted in 1993.  It has an estimate of $180,000 to $220,000.  It failed to sell.

Lam 1

Lot 23, "La Ragazza su Fondo Nero," by Wilfredo Lam, oil on canvas, 36 1/4 by 25 3/4 inches, 1974

Lot 23 is a strong oil on canvas by Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982) that is entitled "La Ragazza su Fondo Nero."  It measures 36 1/4 by 25 3/4 inches and was painted in 1974.  It has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $158,500.

Lam 2

Lot 193, "Untitled (Totem)," by Wilfredo Lam, oil on canvas, 15 3/4 by 19 5/8 inches, 1970

Lot 193 is another Lam oil on canvas, entitled "Untitled (Totem)."  It measures 15 3/4 by 19 5/8 inches.  It was painted in 1970.  It has an estimate of $70,000 to $90,000.  It sold for $146,500.

Sanchez

Lot 28, "Llegada del caminante a la laguna," by Tomas Sanchez, acrylic on canvas, 78 1/4 by 99 3/8 inches, 1999
 
Lot 28 is a very large acrylic on canvas by Tomas Sanchez (b. 1948) that is entitled "Llegada del caminante a la laguna."  It measures 78 1/4 by 99 3/8 inches and was painted in 1999.

It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $602,500.

Like many of his landscapes, the artist includes a very tiny figure of a man.

Another Sanchez, Lot 39, "Buscador de paisajes," sold for $626,500, a world auction record for the artist.

Lot 198 is a good oil on canvas by Matta entitled "Quietly Happy."  It measures 26 1/4 by 18 3/4 inches and was painted in 1983.  It has a modest estimate of $25,000 to $30,000.  It sold for $37,500.


Diego singer

Lot 8, "Harp Player," by Diego Rivera, charcoal and pastel on paper 19 by 24 1/4, 1938

Lot 8 is a great charcoal and pastel on paper by Diego Rivera (1886-1957) entitled "Harp Player."  It measures 19 by 24 1/4 inches and was executed in 1938.  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It failed to sell.

Diego Rivera Christian

Lot 11, "Portrait of Linda Christian," by Diego Rivera, oil on canvas, 44 by 35 5/8 inches, 1947

Lot 11 is a oil on canvas portrait of actress Linda Christian by Diego Rivera.  It measures 44 by 35 5/8 inches and was painted in 1947.  It is property from the collection of the Baron and Baroness di Portanova and appeared on the cover of an 1962 autobiography by the actress.  It has a modest estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $578,500.  The catalogue entry notes that Rivera was friendly with Chaplin and Dolores Del Rio and painted Paulette Goddard.  He painted Linda Christian in a bikini but this painting was unknown.

Diego bale

Lot 9 is a very fine watercolor on rice paper by Diego Rivera entitled "Cargadores."  It measures 15 by 11 inches and was created in 1937.  It has an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $218,500.

Garza

Lot 22 is a strong work by Candido Portinari (1903-1962) entitled "Lampiao e Maria Bonita," an oil on canvas that measures 39 3/8 by 32 1/4 inches.  It was painted in 1947.  According to an catalogue essay by Abby McEwen, assistant professor at the University of Maryland, "An outlaw hero sometimes referred to as the 'Robin Hood of Brazil,' Lampiao cut a violent and increasingly sadistic path across northeastern Brazil between 1922 and 1938....Brutalized and beheaded in 1938, Lampiao and Maria Bonita have been posthumously remembered as pioneers of agarian land reform and romantic symbols of the rural sertao."  The lot has a modest estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $482,500.
Botero nun

Lot 55 is a delightfully mischievous oil on canvas by Fernando Botero (b. 1932) entitled "Nun Eating an Apple."  It measures 40 by 36 inches and was painted in 1981.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $602,500.

Botero bronze

Lot 53 is a wonderful large bronze of a reclining nude woman by Fernando Botero.  It is 54 inches long and has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It failed to sell.


Atchugarry

Lot 47 is a very beautiful white Carrara marble entitled "Genova per me" by Pablo Atchugarry (b. 1954).  It is 75 inches tall and was created in 1998.  It has an estimate of $120,000 to $180,000.  It sold for $158,500.

Valdvieso


Lot 131, "Figura danzante," by Paul Valdiveso, bronze, 27 1/2 inches high, edtiion of three and artist proof No. 2

Lot 131 is a very handsome bronze statue of a dancing figure wearing a pleated dress.  It has an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.  It sold for $80,500.


Cortazar


Lot 134, "Saturno devorando a los Tiranicias," by Roberto Cortazar, oil on panel, 98 1/4 by 69 inches, 2008

One of the more dramatic works in the auction is Lot  134, an oil on panel that measures 98 1/4 by 69 inches by Robert Cortazar (b. 1962).  Entitled "Saturno devorando a los Tiranicias," it was created in 2008.  It has an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000.  It sold for $23,750.


De Amaral

Lot 61, "Montana," by Olga de Amaral, painted woven fabric, 52 inches square, 1998

Lot 61 is an impressive, painted woven fabric, 52 inches square, by Olga de Amaral (b. 1932).  It was created in 1998.  It has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.  It sold for $103,500.


Zuniga

Lot 4, "Juchiteca sentada," by Francisco Zuniga, Carrara marble, 41 inches high, 1972-9

Lot 4 is a very impressive and fine Carrara marble statue by Francisco Zuniga (1912-1998) entitled "Juchiteca sentada."  It is 41 inches high and was worked on from 1972 to 1979 and it is a classic Zuniga composition, most often, and too repetitively, seen in bronze.  The rendering in marble, however, is wonderful.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $554,500.
