Matta black

This Latin American Art auction at Christie's New York November 20 and 21, 2013 is highlighted by very good works by Matta, Camargo, Tamayo, Carrington, Kutica, Torres-Garcia, Reveron and Rivera.

There are several works by Matta (1911-2002) in the auction.

Lot 13, "Morphologie Psychologique (Fleureur), is an oil on canvas by Matta that measures 28 by 36 inches and was painted in in 1939.  The catalogue entry notes that the painting "is a seminal Matta work, done not long after he first began to paint in oil on canvas after working as a draftsman  in the Paris atelier of Le Corbusier.  It has an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000.  It sold for $995,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.  The auction total was $21,261,125.

Matta yellow

Lot 44, "Exterieur de l'image," by Matta, oil on canvas, 79 by 118 inches, 1973

Lot 44 is a very large and very bright abstract composition by Matta entitled "Exterieur de l'image."  An oil on canvas, it measures 79 by 118 inches and was painted in 1973.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $350,000.  It sold for $365,000.

Matta green

Lot 12, "Salt of the Earth," by Matta, oil on canvas, 45 by 57 1/2 inches, 1955

Lot 12 is a good, fiery abstract composition by Matta from 1955.  Entitled "Salt of the Earth," it is an oil on canvas that measure 45 by 57 1/2 inches.  It has an estiamte of  $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $341,000.

Lot 45, "Syllable of Spring," by Matta, oil on canvas, 37 1/4 by 57 1/4 inches, 1953

Lot 45 is a large abstract composition by Matta with the marvelous title of  "Syllable of Spring."  It look like a combustible caterpillar struggling to emerge from a snow-covered field of twigs.  An oil on canvas, it measures 37 1/4 by 57 1/4 inches and was painted in 1953.  It has an estimate of $225,000 to $275,000.  It failed to sell.


Lam

Lot 7, "Des Memes Racines (Cheval Bon Dieu)," by Wilfredo Lam,oil on linen, 29 by 36 1/2 inches, 1945

Lot 7 is a good, typical oil on linen by Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982).  It is entitled "Des Memes Racines (Cheval Bon Dieu)" and measures 29 by 36 1/2 inches.  It was painted in 1945.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.  It sold for $461,000.


Kutica

Lot 125, "Marinos encerrados en el mar de Bothnia," by Guillermo Kuitca, acryillic on canvas, 36 by 74 inches, 1991

One of the auction's strongest works is Lot 125, "Marinos encerrados en el mar de Bothnia," by Guillermo Kuitca (b. 1961).  An acryllic on canvas, it measures 36 by 74 inches and was painted in 1991  It has an estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $93,750.



Kutica 2

Lot 51, "El Mar Dulce," by Guillermo Kuitca, oil on canvas, 59 by 78 3/4 inches, 1984

Lot 51 is a very dramatic and large oil on canvas by Guilleremo Kuitca (b. 1961) that is entitled "El Mar Dulce."  It measures 59 by 78 3/4 inches and was painted in 1984.  The painting is inspired by the famous scene of a baby carriage bounding out of control down a large staircase in Odessa.  The lot has an estimate of $125,000 to $175,000.  It sold for $149,000.

Tamayo 1

Lot 50, "Personajes cogidos de la mano," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas 76 1/8 by 51 inches, 1971

The best of the works being offered by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) is Lot 50, "Personajes cogidos de la mano," an oil and sand on canvas. It measures 76 1/8 by 51 inches and was painted in 1971.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.   It sold for $653,000.

Lot 6, "Aviories de paso," by Rufino Tamayo, oil and sand on canvas, 40 by 30 inches, 1947

Lot 6 is another Tamayo oil and sand on canvas that is entitled "Aviories de paso."  It measures 40 by 30 inches and was painted in 1947.  It was once in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art.  It has an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000.  It sold for $635,000.

Torres-Garcia

Lot 24, "Pintura Constructiva," by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, oil on carboard, 20 by 16 5/8 inches,1935

Lot 24 is an excellent oil on cardboard entitled "Pintura Constructiva" by Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949).  It measures 20 by 16 5/8 inches and was painted in 1935.  It has an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000.  It sold for $605,000.

Reveron

Lot  21, "Juanita sentada (Descanso)," by Armando Reveron, oil and tempera on paper laid down on board, 37  3/4 by 43 inches, 1933

Lot 21 is a very pleasant oil and tempera on paper laid down on board by Armando Reveron (1889-1954).  It measures 37 3/4 by 43 inches and was painted in 1933.  It is entitled "Juanita sentada (Descanso)."  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $341,000.


Xul Solar

Lot 91, "Good King Wenceslas," by Alejandro Xul Solar, tempera and ink on paper laid down on cardboard, 7 by 8 5/8 inches, 1961
 
Alejandro Xul Solar (1887-1963) is noted for his very colorful and surprising work of which Lot 91 is a good example.  Entitled "Good King Wenceslas," it is a tempera and ink on paper laid down on cardboard.  It measures 7 by 8 5/8 inches.  It was painted in 1961.  It has an estimate of $18,000 to $22,000.  It failed to sell.

Rivera

Lot 70, "Mujer Tehuana Vendiendo Teias," by Diego Rivera, watercolor and graphite on paper, 4 by 5 1/8 inches, 1950

Lot 70 is a very small but very lovely watercolor and graphite on paper by Diego Rivera (1886-1957).  It measures 4 by 5 1/8 inches and was executed in 1950.  It has an estimate of $18,000 to $22,000.  It sold for $50,000.

Schendel

Lot 30, "Untitled (Water, Only, God, Harvest, Burn, No)," by Mira Schendel, mixed media on canvas, 21 1/2 by 15, 1964

One of the more striking works in the auction is Lot 30, "Untitled (Water, Only, God, Harvest, Burn, No)," by Mira Schendel (1919-1988),  The mixed media on canvas measures 21 1/2 by 15 inches and was created in 1964,  It has an an estimate of $100,000 to $150,000.  It sold for $125,000.

Carrington 1

Lot 46, "Santa Teresa en la cocina," by Leonora Carrington, oil on canvas, 20 by 39 3/8 inches, 1958

Lot 46 is an oil on canvas by Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) entitled Santa Teresa en la cocina."  An oil on canvas, it measures 20 by 39 3/8 inches and was painted in 1958.  It has an estimate of $225,000 to $275,000.  It failed to sell.


Carrington 2

Lot 15, "Arca de No," by Leonora Carrington, oil on canvas, 19 3/4 by 44 inches, 1967


Lot 14 is another work by Carrington that is an oil on canvas that measures 19 3/4 by 44 inches.  It is entitled "Arca de No" and was painted in 1967.  It has an estimate of $150,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $245,000.

Borges

Lot 177 is an impressive acryllic on canvas by Jacobo Borges (b. 1931) entitled "Esperando a... (waiting for...)."  It measures 19 3/4 by 59 1/8 inches and was painted in 1972.  It has an estimate of $18,000 to $22,000.  It sold for $56,250.

Berni

Lot 52, "Cabez quermada," by Antonio Berni, mixed media assemblageon board, 25 by 18 1/8 inches, 1962

Lot 52, "Cabez quermada," is a striking work by Antonio Berni that is a mixed media assemblage on board that measures 25 by 18 1/8 inches.  It was created in 1962 and nas an esitmate of $60,000 to $80,000.  It sold for $75,000.


Botero1

Lot 3, "The Family," by Fernando Botero, charcoal and pastel on canvas, 78 1/4 by 69 inches, 1974

Lot 3 is a very fine charcoal and pastel on canvas by Fernando Botero (b. 1932) entitled "The Family."  It measures 78 1/4 by 69 inches and was created in 1974.  It has an estimate of $300,000 to $400,000.  It sold for $533,000.

Card players

Lot 19, "Card Players," by Fernando Botero, oil on canvas, 60 by 71 inches, 1991

Lot 19 is a large oil on canvas by Fernando Botero (b. 1932) entitled "Card Players."  It measures 60 by 71 inches and was painted in 1991.  It has an estimate of  $1,500,000 to $2,000,000.  It failed to sell.



Camargo

Lot 36, "Untitled (Relief  No.21/52),"by Sergio Camargo painted wood construction, 33 1/4 by 33 1/2 inches, 1964

Lot 36, "Untitled (Relief No. 21/52)," is a white painted wood construction by Sergio Camargo (1930-1990).  It measures 33 1/4 by 33 1/2 inches and was painted in 1964.  It has an estimate of $400,000 to $600,000.  It sold for $2,165,000, a world auction record for the artist.


Another Camargo, Lot 25, "a similar painted wood construction in red that measures 47 1/4 by 39 1/8 inches and dated 1970 has an estimate of $700,000 to $900,000.  It sold for $1,325,000.


Cruz diez

Lot 27, "Physichromie No. 1334," by Carlos Cruz-Diez, acrylic and plastic elements on panel with aluminum frame, 24 1/4 by 59 1/8 inches 2000

One of the more striking geometric works is Lot 27, "Physichromie No. 1334," by Carlos Cruz-Diez (b. 1923).  An acrylic and plastic elements on panel with aluminum frame, it measures 24 1/4 by 59 1/8 inches and was created in 2000.  It has an estimate of $175,000 to $225,000.  It sold for $269,000.
