The Fall 2015 auction of South Asian Modern & Contemporary Art at Christie's New York September 17, 2015 is highlighted by an impressive group of paintings by Maqbool Fida Husain (1913-2011) and good works by Francis Newton Souza, Akbar Padamsee, and V.S. Gaitonde.

Lot 752, "Orchestration Red," is a fabulous oil on canvas by Husain that was painted in 1967.  It has an estimate of $250,000 to $400,000.  It failed to sell.

Untitled by Husain

Lot 746, "Untitled," by Maqbool Fida Husain, watercolor and mixed media on mount board, 30 by 40 inches, 1983

A later Husain work is Lot 746, an untitlted watercolor and mixed media on mount board that was created in 1983.  It measures 30 by 40 inches.  It has an estimate of $35,000 to $50,000.  It sold for $35,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.

The sale total was $8,770,062 with 89 percent of the offered lots selling.

Another work by Padamsee is Lot 753, "Untitled (Metascape," an oil and acrylic on canvas that measures 66 by 45 inches.  It was painted in 2009.  It has an estimate of $180,000 to $250,000.  It sold for $233,000.

Gaitonde

Lot 701 is a very nice and charming watercolor and ink on card laid down on cardboard by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (1924-2001).  It was done in the early 1950s.  It has an estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.  It sold for $197,000.

Souza
