Carprinteros

Lot 103, "Escalera (Oven Step)," by Los Carpinteros, powder coated steel, 36 3/4 by 30 by 54 inches, 2001

Another creation of Los Carpinteros is Lot 103, "Escalera (Oven Step)," a four-tiered stove of powder coated steel that measures 36 3/4 by 30 by 54 inches. It was created in 2001.

In the catalogue entry, Alexandre Arrechia, a member of Los Carpinteros, explained that "the idea was to explore ideas about access and prohibition by altering the primary use of ordinary objects."  "We turned the gallery into a home of a possible or an impossible living.  Our idea was to connect the coils to an outlet and be able to turn them on and off, able to regulate the heat and the red color in the coils.  Unfortunately, the gallery's insurance company strongly opposed our idea.  No wonder in part, the exhibition was about common ojects and familiar lives turned paradoically into something not accessible, impossible.  Being born in revolutionary Cuba, the metaphor was quite obvious."

Thelot has a modest estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.  It sold for $40,000.

At the May 25, 2011 Latin American Art auction at Sotheby's, it had an estimate of $800,000 to $1,200,000 and sold for $1,022,500.

According to the catalogue entry for that auction by Julia P. Herzberg, this painting belongs to "a cohesive group of works distinguished by delicately drawn lines and impressionatically dappled paint."  "Les Oiseaux Voilé's exquisite coloration - blues, touches of light greens and reds - is held together by alternating light and dark black lines that imbue the animated forms with a sense of movement and buoyancy.  The jewel-like surface features, winged beings (the 'veiled birds'), crescents or moonshapes, and triangles.  Two eggs are anchored in the foreground, a candle sits in the middle of a cone-shaped form, and the ever present round head appears supported by the barely drawn lines of a hand...The familiar motifs allude to beliefs and/or ceremonies in Afro-Cuban culture and at the same time re-create a sense of a lush tropical landscape."

At this auction, the lot has an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.  It sold for $1,210,000.
