Hopper

Lot 17, "East Wind Over Weehauken," by Edward Hopper, oil on canvas, 34 by 50 1/4 inches, 1934

By Carter B. Horsley

This auction of American Paintings December 5, 2013 at Christie's New York is highlighted by superb works by Charles Demuth, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Sanford Robinson, George Inness, Edward Hopper, George L. K. Morris, Marsden Hartley, Oscar Bluemner, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Winslow Homer, one of the nicest auction offerings in the field in recent years.

The star of the auction is Lot 17, "East Wind Over Weehawken," by Edward Hopper (1882-1967), which is the cover illustration of the catalogue.

It has been consigned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts to support the acquisitions endowment.  An oil on canvas, it measures 34 by 50 1/4 inches and was painted in 1934.  The painting, which has been very widely published and exhibited, can be seen, according to the catalogue, "as the birth of his fully realized, mature artistic vision," manifesting his "celebrated aesthetic, which distinguished him from his peers and created a uniquely American iconography that continues to define him as one of the most important and influential artists of the twentieth century."  The painting depicts "a characteristically overlooked area  on the fringe of the thriving urban hub, presenting an image of the banal reality of American life that captures the overarching character and condition of mid-century existence in the United States," the catalogue entry opined.  The general dreariness and lack of refinement of the American suburbs is lovingly depicted by Hopper; the catalogue entry noted that "Hopper's oeuvre is defined by works such as East Wind Over Weehauken - scenes of quiet tension that create a visceral unease in the viewer."

It has an estimate of $22,000,000 to $28,000,000.  It sold for $40,485,000 including the buyer's premium as do all results mentioned in this article.  It was the second highest auction price for an American Art work exceeded only by "Saying Grace" by Norman Rockwell the previous evening at Sotheby's that sold for more than $46 million.  The auction total was $76.8 million, somewhat less than what Sotheby's achieved but still very impressive considering that had a pretty poor sell-through rate of 69 percent.  It was the highest total ever for an American Art auction at Christie's amd Elizabeth Sterling, the head of the department, said after the auction that the results "underscored the rising strength of the market for American Art, particularly for Modernist works,"  adding that "illustration also performed consistently well throughout the same.'  As at Sotheby's, buyers were more enthusiastic about mid-20th Century illustration than about 19th Century Hudson River School works that are more beautiful and important.

Sheeler

Lot 21, "In the Key of Blue," by Charles Demuth, tempera and pencil on board, 19 3/4 by 16 inches, 1919

The most beautiful work in the auction is Lot 21, "In the Key of Blue," by Charles Demuth (1883-1935), whose precision outshines Hopper's lack of painterliness.  A tempera and pencil on board, Demuth's work measures 19 3/4 by 16 inches and was painted in 1919.  This work, which has been widely exhibited and published, once belonged to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller who gifted it to the Museum of Modern Art in 1935, which subsequently inexplicably sold it.

The catalogue entry notes that the title refers to an 1883 essay on aesthetics by John Addington Symonds contemplating the limitations of language to convey color.

It has a modest estimate of $1,800,000 to $2,400,000.  It sold for $1,685,000.
